Coconut Oil

Hi, Misty

I just asked a question about calories and now I have a question about Coconut Oil.

I read the Flat Belly Diet book, which talks about MUFA's. It did not list coconut oil.

I add a tablespoon of melted coconut oil to my morning smoothie, based on what I've read from your site.

But they don't list it as a heart healthy fat.

Please advise!!

Thanks!

Hello

Thank you for your question regarding coconut oil, one of my favorite medicinal foods.

You refer to "The Flat Belly Cure" and "MUFA's".

MUFA's are in reference to Monounsaturated Fatty Acids such as that in Olive Oil, Olives, Avocado as well, one of the 3 fatty acids we find in animal proteins. This is a reference to a "Mediterranean Lifestyle" which claims to be heart healthy.

While MUFA's are in fact heart healthy, so are all fatty acids other than that of trans fatty acids. This is where the mediterranean diet drops the ball of sorts. There is some speculation that MUFA's store more easily in the adipose tissue of post menopausal women. (ref: Enig)

Coconut Oil is a unique oil. You might be confusing the reference MUFA's with MCFA's (Medium Chain Fatty Acids) those found in coconut oil. The unique quality of MCFA's are the utilization by the body. These fatty acids are utilized by the liver for energy and are processed much differently than that of other fatty acids. Butter has the same unique quality.

Coconut oil is 90% Saturated Fat and is in fact a heart healthy fat, as well protective and healing to organs in the body. With its anti-fungal, anti-microbial, anti-protozoic (parasite) abilities, coconut oil carries so many valuable health qualities including that of heart health thereby increasing your HDL or "good cholesterol".

Unfortunately, the authors and followers of the mediterranean diet have not referenced recent research such as that of the largest study on saturated fat out of Duke University in October of 2009 which is referenced in my healthy food list page.

Thank you, Misty! I'll check out the website -- and keep adding it to my smoothie. I'd like to get my daily intake up, but I must admit I'm afraid of the calories. I know you recommend 3 to 4 tablespoons. I'm only at one, and I don't know if that's enough to reap any benefit.

Thanks again!
