Cod Liver Oil,Coconut Oil,Vitamin D3 drops and Omega 3

by Melissa
(Idaho Falls)

Hi Misty,

I started my entire family on a gluten free, sugar free lifestyle and everything is going well.

I want to add Cod Liver Oil, Coconut Oil, Vitamin D and Omega 3 to our diets. However, our family Doctor is of no help telling me to give them reduced fat vit d fortified milk and flintstone vitamins. How much should I give them of these? Ages are 2 1/2,5 1/2 and 8 1/2. I had them checked for deficiencies and the only thing that was flagged is too high B12 and too low Vitamin D.

Do I have to have them rechecked regularly if I start giving them these supplements?

Thank you for all that you do!

Hello Melissa!

Let me begin by commending you for your transition from sugar and gluten. These two items alone are responsible for so much disease. I find that when one reduces to eliminates their consumption of gluten in particular, so many markers of good health and well being improve.

The addition of coconut whether it be in the form of oil, butter, milk or flakes is a valuable addition to any diet. With the anti-microbial and anti-bacterial properties as well, the medium chain triglycerides, this is such a functional food.

Adding it to smoothies, soups, stews and cooking with it as well as making a trail mix with the flakes is the best delivery for this valuable food.

Omega's......You might consider a product such as Udo's and follow the directions on the label for the incorporation of the 3, 6, 9 fatty acids.

Cod Liver Oil at 1 tsp. per 50lbs. of body weight and about 1000-2000 IU of D3 for the children as well. 1000 for the little one and 2000 for the older two.

There really is no sense in testing for the essential fatty acids. Just by reducing to eliminating their intake of vegetable oils as well as increasing the intake of grass fed/pastured/wild caught animal proteins, you should find that their ratios will probably be right in line. Some of this, we don't want to over think too much.

It is not unusual for a Dr. to endorse synthetic vitamins and Vitamin D fortified milk. As we know, the D in milk is in fact synthetic and one would be hard pressed to receive any valuable benefits from a reduced fat milk at all. In fact, per Mary Enig, a lipid biochemist, reduced fat dairy contains oxidized cholesterol and the only dangerous cholesterol is oxidized cholesterol.

Was your Dr. at all concerned about the elevated B12 levels?

In good health!
Misty
