Dairy and Soy allergy

My son is 12 months old and has a dairy protein allergy. He was diagonsed with this around 3 months of age. We had to put him on a hypoallergenic formula, but now that he is old enough to get off of the formula we are finding that he is still having issues with dairy and now soy.

My son's doctor said he doesn't have to have milk, but it is changing a routine that he has known since birth. I hope that he will adjust quick to the new routine without formula but any input would be greatly appreciated.

Is there a "milk" you would recommend that we try with him that is dairy and soy free?

Hi Emily!
Thank you for your question. It's not unusual for a child to have casein allergies. This is the protein in the dairy. Generally, a child who has a milk allergy suffers from the hardened proteins due to pasteurization. This is where Raw Milk can be of benefit believe it or not. You can experiment with your baby and the nutrition benefits are astounding from raw milk.

The proteins in raw are much more digestible. Depending on the area in which you are located, you can obtain raw milk through your local Whole Foods or other natural food stores. For your state, check out Real Milk for a potential cow share program where you receive weekly milk for a particular price and you have an actual "share" in that cow.

Should you decide not to go the route of raw milk, goats milk is generally much more digestible than pasteurized cows milk but be aware that goats milk is deficient in Vitamin B12 and Folic Acid.

Non dairy options include Rice, Almond and my personal favorite, coconut milk. None of these options offer the nutrient density that raw milk contains and if it were me, I would try the raw because of the beneficial nutrients I speak of.

Soy is one of the worst options for any baby and please check out my soy allergy page under food to avoid for further clarification on this harmful substance.

How is your baby eating? Do you have him on nutrient dense animal proteins and eggs, sweet potatoes and high quality fruit and vegetables?

I also recommend cod liver oil as well as Vitamin D3 for elevated immune health and if baby has been allergic, a round of pro-biotics is also a good idea. You can find those products under supplements at our Amazon store.
