Foods To Avoid

Obesogens. Is this a new term to you? It sure was for me! I've outlined for your benefit, foods to avoid, dangerous foods and unhealthy foods so you may feed yourself and your family with confidence knowing you are truly nourishing them and not just feeding them.

With the rise of mass food production, there are a variety of potentially dangerous and unhealthy chemicals and additives in our food supply today. You'd be blown away to hear that many of these dangerous additives are derived from crude oil and many other chemical compounds contributing to obesity and disease.


Some fat is not your fault! I can't let you off the hook completely! We can't blame all of our fat on these chemicals in foods to avoid but we can blame some!

There's a great book out on the market you might find interesting written by Stephen Perrine title "The New American Diet". Perrine's book refers to the term OBESOGENS and he's referring to certain chemicals found in common foods to avoid. These toxic chemicals are stored directly in your fat tissue and are released untamed through your body causing havoc and consequently, contributing to not only obesity but also cancers and other illness. Yes, we have reason to outline these dangerous unhealthy foods to avoid and my primary reason is your good health! We in the nutrition sector refer to these harmful hormones as XENOESTROGENS Our Foods to Avoid list should help you navigate your way through the grocery store potentially avoiding these dangerous, unhealthy foods! Your first few times out there shopping are going to take time.

Hydrogenated and Partially Hydrogenated Oils

Hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils are at the top of our dangerous unhealthy foods to avoid. These dangerous oils are altered to make them shelf stable. While it seemed to be a success more than 50 years ago in the storage of foods in our industrialized society, science and research shows this to be a major contributor to heart disease, diabetes, obesity and other degenerative ailments. Imagine ingesting a plastic substance, confusing the body with this foreign molecule only to lay it down in the artery causing damage. There is NO safe limit on hydrogenated oils also known as Trans Fats and should be at the top of your dangerous unhealthy foods to avoid list!

The advent of Crisco was what women thought to be the exciting advancement in baking. In fact, this primarily partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil we know as Crisco even had a cookbook campaign to assist in their sales! More than 50 years later and more heart disease than ever before, butter is always better.

Originally, in the 1930's, Crisco was known as the only Kosher frying oil on the market which was also responsible for its rise to fame.

Crisco, what was once thought to be the answer in healthy cooking turned out to be the biggest tragedy for the human heart in history


Industrial Seed Oils-Polyunsaturates

Yes, this one surprises the heck out of everyone! Most commonly referred to as vegetable oils, these Industrial Seed Oils have replaced our beloved butter. Those so called heart healthy polyunsaturate spreads that are constantly promoted are implicated in:

  • Cancer
  • Heart Disease
  • Asthma
  • Diabetes
  • Accelerated Aging
  • Toxic to Liver
  • Autoimmune Disease
  • Chromosomal Damage
  • PMS
  • Obesity

It's not just limited to the above list either. These polyunsaturated oils are a foods to avoid because as lipid (fat) research shows, these oils are unstable when subjected to oxygen, heat and light. They become rancid and oxidized. Now these oils are obviously unstable when isolated from their plant sources. Our cells are lined with a phospho-lipid layer and vegetable oils can mimic the saturated fat that is supposed to be there causing issues with permeability. Good stuff (nutrient) doesn't get inside the cell and bad stuff (sluffed cell and hormones) does not exit the cell.

Heart disease is now known as an inflammatory disease and if you can follow me here, by eliminating these dangerous unhealthy oils, you will greatly decrease your heart disease risk. Yes, the very oils touted by your health care professional in fact, contribute to heart disease. Can you believe that???

Did you ever think you would live in a world where your Dr. and Dietician are actually killing you and they don't even know they're doing it?

Nutrition is an Elective in Medical School

Elective meaning not required and I challenge you to quiz your primary care physician as to their nutrition education when they recommend that you eliminate cholesterol on the plate.

So, getting back to my reference in inflammation. The human body needs a balance of Omega 3 to Omega 6 fatty acids. These are called essential fatty acids or EFA's, meaning the body does not make them, they are necessary to obtain through diet and must be in a particular intake ratio.

Good Deal......Let's move on then

We need a balance of no more than a 1:3 ratio. That is, Omega 3 to Omega 6 fatty acid balance. Yes, that's a 1 for Omega 3 and a 3 for Omega 6. Currently, the SAD (Standard American Diet) hold your hat.....is comprised of more than 1:50! Yes, 50 being the Omega 6 number. No wonder more than 700,000 Americans are diagnosed with heart disease every year!

Visualize the omega 6 fatty acids causing inflammation while the omega 3 fatty acids work like a fire department to calm inflammation. Yes, it's all about balancing the body!

READ YOUR LABELS AND LOOK FOR THE FOLLOWING BIG 5 FOODS TO AVOID:

The Big 5 are:

  • Corn Oil
  • Soybean Oil
  • (Another biggie in EVERYTHING)
  • Safflower Oil
  • Sunflower Oil
  • Canola Oil
(Canola, the biggest con of all, this oil has omega 3 but the ratio to the 6 is in the danger zone)

While some polyunsaturates are known to promote health, the mass advertised oils above are not in the healthy poly class at all.

........I can always spot the person who eats plenty of saturated fat and very low carbohydrate. They are lean, their skin is beautiful and glowing with very few obvious aging signs and very little cellulite. That was one of the things I noticed with my own skin, wrinkles had all but disappeared, I maintain a tan without countless hours in the sun and I have very little cellulite at 46! Your dangerous foods to avoid list should include the following and don't forget, butter is the perfect food........

High Fructose Corn Syrup

High Fructose Corn Syrup also referred to as HFCS and Corn Syrup. If I told you that HFCS was at the top of the dangerous foods to avoid list because it contributes directly to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease would you still eat it? Would you allow your children to consume it? Some might! But if I told you it is IMMEDIATELY STORED AS FAT and you want to kick obesity to the curb would you think about it then?

HFCS is the least expensive form of sugar and it is in almost everything. This substance is contributing to a world wide epidemic. This "cheap sugar" is responsible for disrupting metabolic pathways that regulate your hunger signals.

The best way to get fatty liver without the buzz! Drink soda! I tease but it is truth.

High Fructose Corn Syrup and Agave are highly dangerous to the human liver.

You and your family deserve better than to ingest this dangerous substance. This inexpensive and ultra-concentrated sugar has no resemblance to real food made by nature. There has been some recent reporting of mercury found in the processing of this health deteriorating substance.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and voice my opinion-

High Fructose Corn Syrup and Trans Fats are in fact child abuse in the form of food. No one else has the power. You are directly responsible for the long term health of your children.

If one has the knowledge, they have the power. You now have the knowledge so use your power!

I sure wish someone had given me this information while raising my own children. I was THAT parent, but I vow I will NOT be THAT grandparent.

When eliminating soda from your child's diet, do not replace it with diet soda or fruit juice. Fruit juice is not the same as eating fruit. It's strictly the sugar of the fruit without enzymes and beneficial fibers. Stevita has a nice product line that you can transition your children to for a healthier beverage option.


In a large study out of Singapore involving over 60,000 individuals, those who consumed on average 5 high fructose corn syrup sweetened sodas per week had nearly double the risk for developing deadly pancreatic cancer.

“The high levels of sugar in soft drinks may be increasing the level of insulin in the body, which we think contributes to pancreatic cancer cell growth,” said Mark Pereira, Ph.D., senior author on the study and associate professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota.

Flour and Sugar

I've lumped the two of these together because no matter how you slice it, they are foods to avoid. Rainy days of baking were never thought to be foods to avoid, dangerous foods or unhealthy foods but both contribute to erratic blood sugar and neither provide you an ounce of true nutrition.

In fact, flour and sugar is so de-vitalized that the human body robs vitamins and minerals from its own tissue, bone and blood to assimilate these as food.

The human body was never meant to consume isolated components of food! The grains the flour has been made of contain "built-in" vitamins, minerals, enzymes and even BLOOD SUGAR REGULATING substance called chromium. So you see, Mother Nature really does know best. Don't let this be your ticket though to consume whole grain in abundance. Grains are converted to glucose and the glucose found in the human body will serve a number of different purposes. It is either used to provide a person with energy as and when required, it can be stored in muscle tissue or the liver as glycogen, it may be shuttled to the liver and then converted into lipids. Once it has been converted into lipids it is then stored in the body as fat. (Grains in abundance are not healthy and for some, grains at all are not the healthiest choice)

Since Man began altering food, Man got fatter and consequently, sicker.

What many do not even realize, bleached flour has a chemical compound added to it called Alloxan, a toxic glucose analogue, which selectively destroys insulin-producing cells in the pancreas when administered to rodents and many other animal species. Could this be contributing to the elevated rates of pancreatitis we've seen in recent years? Pancreatic cancers possibly? Believe it or not, this dangerous additive was identified in the 1800's and it is still in our food supply today. Had I known that my innocent white bread purchase could have killed my child's pancreas? I would have never allowed them to eat it. If you think someone in big food has your health at heart, think again. 200 years later, this is the kind of behavior in our society that I just don't understand.

  • Bleached Flour
  • Unbleached Flour
  • Whole Wheat Flour

Flour makes wonderful play doh but is a horrible food whether bleached, unbleached or whole wheat. Never should it be considered a weight loss food. I personally classify it as a dangerous, unhealthy food to avoid. Let's face it, you're going to have days off. Use the 95/5 rule. (That's 95% on plan saving the 5% for special occasions)

Of course while sugar does not carry Alloxan, it also robs the body of vital nutrients, disrupts blood sugar levels and contributes to a myriad of disease.

Now researching your labels for sugar can be overwhelming by anyone's standards! A trick for you though is to always look for the word "OSE". Anything that ends in OSE is always a sugar. I use the example, fructOSE and dextrOSE. These are always at the top of your list of dangerous unhealthy foods to avoid. Were you aware that cancer cells hyper metabolize on glucose? Yes, this means that cancer feeds off of sugar.

And then there are sugar alcohols which claim NOT to affect blood sugar levels but in my experience, this is very individual! What affects you might not affect me!

There are a great deal of low carb candies on the market today and these are sweetened with sugar alcohols, usually maltitols. Don't confuse these with the more natural Xylitol and Erithrytol sugar alcohols I recommend in the healthy food list. Though these are processed and carry their own issues, I won't burden you with that just yet.

READ YOUR LABELS AND LOOK FOR THE FOLLOWING:

  • Malitol
  • Maltitol
  • (take note of the different spelling I've seen both spellings on labels. Small detail but important!)
  • Mannitol
  • Sorbitol

One does not want to indulge in too many of these or one may need to change their under pants!

Yet, another great reason to adhere to the Foods to Avoid list!


Artificial Sweeteners

Artificial Sweeteners are chemical derivatives of coal and methyl alcohol. The most popular artificial sweetener and most controversial on the market today is Aspartame or primarily known as Equal. The side effects reported include:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Paralysis
  • Nausea
  • Multiple sclerosis symptoms
  • Anxiety
  • Slurred Speach
  • Fibromyalgia symptoms
  • Change of Mood
  • Tinnitus
  • Joint Pain
  • Depression
  • Systemic Lupus
  • Various Cancers
  • Increased Hunger
  • Weight Gain

In many cases with diabetics, aspartame raises blood glucose levels falsely. This is dangerous for everyone! We refer to this chemical as a EXCITOTOXIN also. A great household tip for you which should also tell you how safe this sweetener is, many of us use this as ant poison! Yes, sprinkle a little aspartame around areas of entry and the ants will carry the substance back to the nest feeding it to their young and they all perish.

As with Soy Protien and HFCS, this insidious chemical is in almost all gums and sugar free candy as well as diet sodas.

Sweet N Low was listed as a carcinogen and carried a warning label until Congress passed legislation late last year to remove the warning label that's been required on saccharin and saccharin-sweetened products since 1977. A coal tar derivative, it's a good idea to avoid it. Carcinogens cause cancer, it's a known fact and the public is not served well with the removal of this warning.

Sugar Free Gum

  • Sugar Free Candy
  • Sugar Free Mints
  • Sugar Free Soda
  • Sugar Free Syrups
  • Sugar Free Cough Syrups
  • Sugar Free Lozenges
  • There are controversial reports on this dangerous food to avoid and I've known folks who have defended it. Many want absolute scientific evidence that this substance is harmful to them and their families all the while using the excitootoxin. Anecdotal evidence of 92 documented side effects and the fact that there are questionable activities behind the product, is enough for me to not offer my body as a guinea pig.

    The following aspartame testimonial was written by a dear friend and colleague of mine in the world of health and nutrition.

    "People often say that aspartame is one of those absolutely harmless things. That your “mileage may vary”. That it doesn’t affect anyone. That anyone who questioned the stuff was crazy.

    After 20 years I felt that way too. And then my doctor presented the MRI report in 2005, the images hinting at the beginning stages of Multiple Sclerosis.

    While searching for answers, I stopped using aspartame.     And it's enough for me too. My friend and I prefer you not suffer as she has. Let her story be your motivation to refuse to put this neurotoxin in your beautiful body.

    The newest artificial sweetener on the market referred to as Splenda, also known as sucralose is also chemically altered. In the lab, sugar molecules are replaced with chlorine molecules. Some say you might as well drink your pool water. This sweetener is so new that the side effects aren't taken as seriously as those from aspartame. If you must use it, understand the following: The chlorinated molecules have the ability to disrupt digestion and with digestion responsible for more than 70% of your immune system, and it is well known that chlorine depletes your Vitamin E stores, one of our MAJOR antioxidants. With cancer rates at all time highs, you might want to work on discontinuing your need for sucralose.

    Monosodium Glutamate

    Also known as MSG, this Neurotoxic flavor enhancer is referred to on food labels under many tricky names. The words natural flavors sound innocent don't they? Not if they're a neurotoxin! This will be your most complicated dangerous foods to avoid and identify while shopping. When we refer to neurotoxins, we are talking about the chemicals that are able to pass through the blood brain barrier literally poisoning us and causing symptoms such as:

    • Headache
    • Dizziness
    • Diarrhea
    • Memory Loss
    • Irrational Behavior
    • Fluttering Heartbeats
    • Rash/Hives
    • Swelling of Prostate/Vagina
    • Tongue Swelling
    • Numbness/Paralysis

    Soy

    With the false scare of saturated fat in the form of animal proteins, this high protein bean has been touted for its health benefits for Man, Woman and Child with devastating outcomes. It is scary what happens when financial gain dictates our food recommendations.

    Eat this bean for a healthy heart!

    But, lose your thyroid, ability to digest protein, contract hormone induced breast cancer, your sons will become infertile, your girls develop at 10, and the list is long and this is at the top of our foods to avoid list as it is highly dangerous and we are being told the direct opposite!

    The soybean is so toxic that it causes thyroid disruption in the form of goiters, slows the thyroid, contributes to leaky gut syndrome and has hormonal side effects on Men, Women, babies and children. Some say feeding a baby soy protein formula's is like giving a baby a birth control pill. Does this sound like dangerous foods to avoid to you?

    BPA-Bisphenol-A

    The Food and Drug Administration has reversed its position on the safety of Bisphenol A, a chemical found in plastic bottles, soda cans, food containers and thousands of consumer goods, saying it now has concerns about health risks. While there are no specific foods to avoid here, it's the container your food is carried and stored in that poses the dangers.

    Growing scientific evidence has linked the chemical to a host of problems, including cancer, hormonal disruption including thyroid and weight gain, sexual dysfunction and heart disease. Federal officials said they are particularly concerned about BPA's effect on the development of fetuses, infants and young children.

    This comes after much evidence. Our FDA is far too conservative when it comes to your good health. If we're not dropping dead like flies, and we're being poisoned slowly, it must not be classified as foods to avoid.

    These are very real concerns and you've been seeing it on mainstream media.

    Yes, a healthy food might be a new unhealthy dangerous food to avoid just because of this cancer causing chemical.

    Some foods are difficult to avoid but I do have a few safety suggestions for you to help keep you and your family safe.

    • Tuna in Packets
    • Tomatoes in Glass Jars or Cartons
    • Soups in Cartons

    Acidic foods are especially prone to plastic poisoning. Turn your bottles over and be especially cautious!

    Food and water containers are not the only dangerous BPA chemical containing products. You also must worry about your child's toy choices!

    THESE DANGEROUS CONTAINERS ARE LABELED WITH THE NUMBERS

    These numbers can be found on the bottom of your plastic containers and are in a triangular box.

    For those of you who are pregnant, understand that these toxic chemicals are delivered through the umbilical cord and a phenomenal amount of blood is pumped through this cord during the last trimester. You must be especially careful and adhere to the "foods to avoid" list.

    I'll close the dangerous unhealthy foods to avoid list now with a sincere apology. My apology for delivering such dreadful news about our food supply.

    I was in the gym just the other day talking to a pregnant woman. This is her first child and choosing a healthy lifestyle herself, I felt sorry for her for the frustration she is feeling bringing a new organic being into this polluted world. She was frantically writing things down as I spoke and finally, I just shared this site with her. I breathed a sigh of relief knowing I was doing the right thing by sharing this information without a fee, most particularly the importance of foods to avoid.

    It's not too late, and you now have knowledge which gives you power. Use your super powers and choose fresh, clean food because your liver is already working over time processing that in which we can't control, why not give it a little helping hand with those that you can control?

    I get this question often and while it seems like there are so many foods to avoid, you should feel liberated that fat is actually a healthy substance not a dangerous one. We're just so used to grabbing convenience items that don't contribute to health. Remember to check out the healthy foods list.

    We're just generally lazy and forget to invest in our most valuable asset, our body. We change the fluids in our cars, rotate the tires and do regular maintenance but neglect our bodies. You can buy a new car but you can't buy a new body no matter what Hollywood says!
