Honey -- Good or Bad?

by Nancy
(Utah)

I've read quite a bit about the benefits of honey, including the honey-vinegar tonic touted by Dr. Jarvis and others. I took the tonic for awhile, and felt the difference.

But I'd like to really apply the low-carb approach to my lifestyle, and wondered if that meant eliminating honey along with the other carb-laden sweeteners. What's your take on the honey issue? I'll stick with xylitol for now, as I try to kick the sugar habit.

Thanks for your great site and all its carefully researched information!

Hi Nancy

Thank you for your question. Honey is touted as a beneficial food in many different circles.

This can be misleading because there is a huge difference between processed honey and local raw honey.

Beneficial enzymes in raw honey range from a healing salve to immune boosting allergy fighting properties and everything in between.

The Apple Cider Vinegar raw honey cocktail has been an old age remedy for many years. While this might be beneficial during high allergenic times as well, to assist the immune system in fighting illness such as sore throats and colds, I don't believe it to be a necessary component to a daily healthful sugar free diet. The interesting thing about this tonic though Nancy is that I recommend raw apple cider vinegar as a mineral boost and beneficial enzyme tonic. Even with the ACV tonic alone, many experience that "energy" you refer to.

I like to consider honey as with other sugar containing foods your infrequent foods.

The difference between table sugar and honey? Table sugar takes solely and honey provides us vitamins, minerals and enzymes. When we consume a food without these nutrients, the body must find them else where (think bone, blood and tissue).

I congratulate you for your decision to focus on the lowcarb/reduced sugar lifestyle. You are making your decision based on health where as many of us begin with a weight loss journey and "discover health" from there.

I believe that if one is doing some special occasion baking, raw honey and molasses are your best choices if avoiding the sugar alcohols and not quite versed in the use of Stevia.

I hope this has been helpful.

As Always,
In good health
Misty

Thanks, Misty!

Thanks for taking the time to provide such a clear, thorough answer, Misty. I noticed your addition of ACV to one's diet for health reasons -- I just couldn't imagine doing so without a sweetener! But if it's added to other things, I'm sure it would be palatable. And I'm sure I can do without the tonic, especially once I'm more successful with the whole low-carb regime. I appreciate your wisdom and insight.
