Melting Coconut Oil

by Tammy Aguilar
(Newburgh, Indiana)

Hi Misty!

I buy my coconut oil in a gallon container. I take a quart size glass jar and fill it to easily scoop my daily servings out of.

I prefer to melt my oil for daily consumption. It's MUCH easier on my taste buds. I don't use the microwave to melt the coconut oil. I set the glass jar of coconut oil in a bowl and fill the bowl with hot or boiling water and let it melt that way.

OK, this is my question. Is it perfectly OK to keep melting the whole quart sized jar of oil over and over without damaging the quality of the coconut oil? Or would it be better to measure out my tablespoon serving each time and only melt that amount?

I have been melting the whole jar for a few months now and haven't had a problem until now. But it seems like lately the oil is turning more of a yellowish color on me and not quite as clear. The oil expiration date is February 24, 2011 so it's not supposed to be expired yet. But the container has been open for a very long time so maybe it expired before it should have.

So anyway.....I am just wondering if it's better to measure out my single serving of oil each time in order to avoid damaging my coconut oil. Or does the heat absolutely not affect the oil no matter how many times you melt it over and over?

And also, is there another easier way to melt my coconut oil than what I am doing?

Hello Tammy

Thank you for your question. Let me begin by applauding you for introducing such a healthy food/medicine into your lifestyle.

Coconut Oil with its fatty acid composition is one of the healthiest oils on earth. One of the reasons is its stability. A stable fat is a healthier fat.

That being said, our coconut oil will melt and solidify at varying times through the year. There are absolutely no changes when the oil is lightly warmed for melting purposes.

I commend you for not using the microwave. Radiation is radiation and we are much safer without it.

As far as a different method for melting? I can't think of a better method than the one you're using.

As always,
In good health my friend

Another Great Alternative For Keeping Coconut Oil Heated
by: Tammy Aguilar

Hi again Misty!

I think I came up with another nice alternative to keeping my coconut oil warm and this one is even easier than the idea I had before.

How about a beverage warmer such as this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Norpro-5569-Electric-Beverage-Warmer/dp/B000E3DTG0/ref=sr_1_1?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1285848591&sr=1-1

One of the reviews say that it keeps your coffee hot but not scalding hot for 4+ hours.

I think this sounds PERFECT for keeping coconut oil heated. What do you think?

Hi Tammy

I'm curious, why would you want to keep the coconut oil heated?

I think putting it into a small glass jar and holding it under hot water is good. Do you use it throughout the day?
