Obesity United States Statistics

The obesity United States statistics are truly a national health care crisis issue for us all.

For so many years, we were told to eat less meat and eat more bread. Well, maybe that wasn't the exact message but that's how the food manufacturing companies ran with the low fat/no fat message. Hey, as long as we consumed less than 30 grams of fat a day, we could eat what we wanted right?

Sadly, that was a low fat recipe for disaster. Now we have so much disease and so little nutrient balance that the following stats are only going to rise.

From the Office of the Surgeon General, Obesity statistics are as follows:

Today’s epidemic of overweight and obesity threatens the historic progress we have made in increasing American’s quality and years of healthy life. The hard facts:

  • Two-thirds of adults and nearly one in three children are overweight or obese.
  • 70% of American Indian/Alaskan Native adults are overweight or obese.
  • The prevalence of obesity in the U.S. more than doubled (from 15% to 34%) among adults and more than tripled (from 5% to 17%) among children and adolescents from 1980 to 2008
  • An obese teenager has over a 70% greater risk of becoming an obese adult.
  • Obesity is more common among non-Hispanic black teenagers (29%) than Hispanic teenagers (17.5%) or non-Hispanic white teenagers (14.5%).

The link below will provide you with a state by state analysis of the obesity trends in America.

For our neighbors, it seems the obesity epidemic also looms. The ways of the Western world have traveled the pond as waistlines grow in America, so do they in our Europeancounter parts.

The World Health Organization provides a global data base on body mass index for those of you visiting the site from a far and wish to research your country's obesity rate.

With this information, it is my hope that the general public will understand how important nutrition is to their health.

We do have choices and with the internet, so much information is made available to us. Take advantage of it and begin making those healthier choices for your health, for your life.
