Understanding Magnesium

by Mary Titus
(Orange, California U.S.A.)

Hi Misty, As you probably know I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes.

I believe that it was caused by magnesium deficiency. I used chelated magnesium oxide and it has done a pretty good job of keeping my glucose levels well within normal. But I need to take quite a bit of it to keep my glucose normal.

My question is which is the most absorbable kind of magnesium I can take to get my mag levels at an optimal range? Also how much is too much magnesium that can be taken without causing health problems.

Thanks Misty, I eagerly await your answer.

Hello Mary

For those not familiar with the mineral magnesium:

Magnesium is needed for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body. It helps maintain normal muscle and nerve function, keeps heart rhythm steady, supports a healthy immune system, and keeps bones strong. Magnesium also helps regulate blood sugar levels, promotes normal blood pressure, and is known to be involved in energy metabolism and protein synthesis.

Mary, I would replace your magnesium oxide with magnesium glycinate or malate. Oxide is the least expensive form of magnesium and oxide salts break apart in metabolism and the oxide requires an antioxidant to neutralize it. You don't want to use up your anti-oxidants while trying to do something healthy! Glycinate/malates are bound to an amino acid, making it much more bio-available and allows the magnesium to more readily enter the cell. If you suffer from fibromyalgia, malate will be your best choice but glycinate a better choice if one suffers ADHD.

One can take up to 2000mg daily Mary and your first sign of lack of tolerance of magnesium would be loose stools.

I would also recommend chromium Mary but in the form of Nutritional Yeast. Chromium is your glucose tolerance factor and assists the cells in the efficient uptake of glucose. You can find nutritional yeast in the bulk section of your favorite health food store or KAL brand at The Vitamin Shoppe or Frontier Brand (my personal favorite ordered online through my amazon store)

I hope this answers your question sufficiently and thank you so very much for your trust.

As always,
In good health
